SALSA

The Super Snack

Investing in health is much easier than ingesting pills. This is why I share things we make and love in hopes that it will help you choose healthier options for your lifestyle. I am also very frugal and don’t like spending unnecessary money on eating out and buying pre-made stuff. Salsa is one of our family’s and friends’ favorite snacks. Super delicious, super nutritious, super colorful, super tasty, and super easy to make. For only couple of bucks, you can have salsa for days, eat it as a snack or add to your taco salad or open up your burrito and use it as a sauce.

By making it yourself, you get more for your buck and you avoid unnecessary preservatives and other junk that you get from store-bought salsa. You get to re-use your jars at home and help the environment.

This is a win win.

Why is so healthy?

Tomatoes are the major dietary source of the antioxidant lycopene, which has been linked to many health benefits, including reduced risk of heart disease and cancer. They are also a great source of vitamin C, potassium, folate, and vitamin K.

Jalapeños: Rich in vitamins A and C and potassium. They also have carotene -- an antioxidant that may help fight damage to your cells – as well as folate, vitamin K, and B vitamins. Many of their health benefits come from a compound called capsaicin. That's what makes the peppers spicy.

Yellow onion: Onions may have several health benefits, mostly due to their high content of antioxidants and sulfur-containing compounds. They have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects and have been linked to a reduced risk of cancer, lower blood sugar levels, and improved bone health.

Garlic: The combined effects on reducing cholesterol and blood pressure, as well as the antioxidant properties, may reduce the risk of common brain diseases like Alzheimer's disease and dementia. Garlic contains antioxidants that protect against cell damage and aging.

White Vinegar: White vinegar may have significant health benefits due to its acetic acid content, including blood sugar control, weight management, reduced cholesterol, and antimicrobial properties.

Cilantro: Researchers have found that cilantro may provide health benefits in the form of reducing the risk of heart disease, diabetes, obesity, and seizure severity, as well as raising energy levels and healthy hair and skin.

Cumin: Promotes Digestion. The most common traditional use of cumin is to treat indigestion. Additionally, cumin is a rich source of iron, lowers blood sugar, improves blood Cholesterol levels, may promote weight loss and fat reduction, may prevent food-borne Illnesses, and may help with drug dependence.

Here is how I make mine:

Heirloom peeled tomato, 32 oz can

1/2 sweet onion

Few cloves of garlic

1 jalapeño pepper (seeds out ) ( If you don’t like heat either do 1/2 or none at all, if you like more heat add more pepper.)

1/2 cup organic white vinegar

1/2 tsp of cumin

Fresh cilantro, handful

1/2 tsp of salt

Blend few second in your blender if you want it chunkier. Blend it a bit longer if you prefer it smooth.

Make your own salsa. Invest in your health. No excuses!

Please share with me any recipes you like to make! Would love to hear your story.

Enjoy.
